As our jars contain fresh, perishable food, we can’t accept returns unless an item is damaged or incorrect.

Fermented foods often contain small amounts of alcohol as a byproduct of the fermentation process. Fermentation is when microorganisms like yeast or bacteria break down sugars into alcohol, acids, and gases. The alcohol content can vary depending on the type of food and the fermentation process. 

• How it happens:

During fermentation, microorganisms metabolise sugars, producing various byproducts, including alcohol (ethanol). 


• Common fermented foods with low alcohol:

Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi typically contain less than 1% alcohol. 


• Fermented foods with higher alcohol:

Some fermented beverages like kombucha and wine can have higher alcohol content, potentially up to 15%. 


• Factors affecting alcohol content:

The type of microorganisms used, the duration of fermentation, and the sugar content of the food all influence the amount of alcohol produced. 


• Examples of fermented foods and alcohol content:
• Yogurt and kefir: Generally contain less than 0.5% alcohol. 
• Sauerkraut and kimchi: Typically contain less than 1% alcohol. 
• Kombucha: Alcohol content varies depending on the brand and process, but can range from around 0.5% to 7%.
• Wine: Can contain up to 15% alcohol. 
• Rye bread and bananas: One source says they can also contain small amounts of alcohol.
